Android

iOS this... iOS that...
It makes me feel a little frustrated when I read all these news about how awesome the iOS version of skritter is.
I never managed to even load the study page properly on my android phone. So I find it hard to imagine how I could use it on a regular basis like I'd like to. I'm not gonna buy an iPhone just for skrittering either. That's not in my budget. And I'm not a big fan of Apple either way. So the question is: is an android app really out of the question ? Or can I hope that maybe in a distant future, there will be one ?
I'm starting to consider making such app myself...

I'd love to see an Android version too, but I couldn't be of any help since I don't know how to develop apps. I can get Skritter to work on my phone...kind of. It always loads one pane above the other; I can't get it to put the writing and details panes side by side (like it does on my computer's web browser) so that I can turn the phone sideways and have more area for writing. A native Android app would be a big help.

If the iOS app is as successful as we think it will be, then we'll want to make a native Android app to match it later. That will be a long ways off, though, as these apps take a huge amount of work.

foozlesprite, if you want the horizontal layout, you can try this URL for now:

That link solves my problem, thank you! Looking forward to the native app someday, and thanks for the awesome work you guys do.

@Adrien I agree 100%. Its a pain. I waste 10 minutes a day waiting for loading on my droid while I can download huge files quickly or load videos no problem. Today someone suggested I restart the phone as Skritter wouldn't load while other things would... I know its a low staff count but I'd love to have an app.

Any chance of the offline availability feature of the iOS version being ported to the website/flash version as a precursor to full development of a native android app? With some form of offline capability I might be able to skritter on the subway. Skrittering on the subway is the holy grail for me, but not so holy that I'd debase myself by buying an Apple product...

My thoughts, exactly.

dbkluck, there's a chance, but it's a gigantic amount of work, so we're not sure what we're going to do with offline access for the web version yet. The reason we did it for the iOS app is that starting from scratch offered us the chance to do it a totally different way.

As for me, Skritter on Android works like a charm. I've a Dell Streak 5 with Android 2.2.2 and a 1 Ghz Snapdragon processor.

I think, it depends on how well the integration of the Hardware and OS by the manufacturer was implemented.

For me on an HTC desire with android 2.3 something it works perfectly. The only issue I had was with the buffering of the characters because I often skritter on the train whilst commuting to work. But I since I am a beta user everything is just fine (the buffer is larger there), not perfect, because there are moments when loading the application or the next character still takes forever, but most of the time I can use the program. I manage to review about 60-90 characters/words (tones, writing and recognition mixed up) during the 30 minutes that I am on the train. So not bad.

Lucky you. I have an HTC wildfire S, with android 2.3, and assuming the flash loads after 5-6 minutes, it just doesn't respond to touch input.
