Looks like the Great Firewall or something like it is preventing you from completely loading www.skritter.com because it is hosted on Google App Engine, which is periodically blocked. Try instead our mirror:

legacy.skritter.cn

This might also be caused by an internet filter, such as SafeEyes. If you have such a filter installed, try adding appspot.com to the list of allowed domains.

Happy

Earlier, I wrote that I'm happy that Skritter is accessible again. Only after I posted that message did I become aware that for now that's all there is to it. I imagine this will change early this evening. I look forward to new daily sessions of writing characters :-D

Seems to be working OK. I have seen a few "Server Error, we're handling it" (or whatever) messages tonight... But overall seems to be working OK.

michau   July 7th, 2011 10:49a.m.

Does it work for you? I can't practice at all, I get the following message:

Writes Disabled

Our apologies; Google has disabled the server's ability to change or add data, either to fix an unexpected problem or for scheduled maintenance.

Until they fully reenable the servers, the site is read-only, and practice is unavailable.

It should be back up shortly. Please try again in a little while. Scheduled maintenance usually takes under an hour.

Thanks for your patience!

cmccorvey   July 7th, 2011 10:57a.m.

Yes, I can practice with no problems. I just verified that.

I am using skritter.cn from China with no significant issues. But, since I am unsure of the state of things, I think I will forego practicing any more tonight in case there are lingering issues which might lose the results of my effort.

Me also at .com version just keep seeing error message about google servers

Byzanti   July 7th, 2011 11:29a.m.

I'm not convinced skritter.cn is working either. It's either that it's not accepting writes, or it is, but the server response time is lagged as hell and it's giving me a wrong impression...

nick   July 7th, 2011 11:44a.m.

So the migration got a bit harried with some last-minute bugs and data transfer issues. I've just finished uploading a bunch of fixes and as far as I know, things are finally working correctly.

skritter.com was still down for practicing until twenty minutes ago, but skritter.cn has been working for a couple hours. My switching servers around and the data transfer finishing may have caused skritter.cn to have poor performance for a while there.

Sorry about this, guys! Let's hope the new datastore does not disappoint. Please let me know of any further issues so that we can get them before they do much damage.

costeni   July 7th, 2011 11:53a.m.

Working fine for me, congratulations! Moving house is always a trauma, and that's just 200 boxes, this is I don't know how many zillions of people's precious memories!

Byzanti   July 7th, 2011 12:57p.m.

Am still getting lots of practice stopping server lag here.

Edit: although it's been working fine for a while now.

Edit2: scrap that, it's still happening. 500 Server Error for the forums too.

LaughingHorseman   July 7th, 2011 2:29p.m.

www.skritter.com has been working fine now. I practiced for about an hour and only ten minutes into my session got two or three lags -- nothing more. I'm almost done for today. It's great to be back.

scott   July 7th, 2011 4:25p.m.

@Byzanti, how's practice going now? It looks like everything is done migrating now so everything should be stable.

And how do you get 500 server errors in the forums, from just browsing the pages or from doing actions like posting or editing posts?

Byzanti   July 7th, 2011 5:14p.m.

Only a small bit of lag in my last 30 minutes of studying. Hopefully it's all ok.

The 500 server errors on the forum were at the same time as the lag, so it's just that, nothing more!

Foo Choo Choon   July 8th, 2011 3:50p.m.

Thanks, but at least one page still awaits relocation: http://live.latest.skrit.appspot.com/server_status

scott   July 8th, 2011 3:58p.m.

Anything with 'skrit' in it no longer works. That was our old app id, our new one is 'write-way', so change the link to http://live.latest.write-way.appspot.com/server_status and you're good to go.

Ideally though, you should go through the domains skritter.com or skritter.cn, rather than directly to our server. The version 'live' is not necessarily the latest version of the site, so best to use: http://www.skritter.com/server_status or http://www.skritter.cn/server_status

I'm going to change the skrit app so that it points you to the correct url rather than still saying we're migrating.

Hope that helps!

Kai Carver   July 8th, 2011 10:58p.m.

speaking of incorrect URLs, you might want to correct the incorrect blog post link on the front page from

http://blog.skritter.com/2011/07/challenge-stories-learning-200-words-in.html

to

http://blog.skritter.com/2011/06/challenge-stories-learning-200-words-in.html

and (even nit-pickier, sorry!) correct the link in the error page from:

Sorry, the page you were looking for in the blog
Skritter Blog | ...
http://blog2.skritter.com/
does not exist.

to

http://blog.skritter.com/

nick   July 10th, 2011 3:30p.m.

I've fixed the first one. Can't fix the second one--our Blogger blog is actually blog2.skritter.com, and blog.skritter.com is a redirect thing we've set up so that people from China can see our Blogger. When we go directly to a Blogger error page like that, we can't rewrite the URLs properly.
