Adding words into a category

funchinese   July 13th, 2011 6:39a.m.

Hello,

How do I add words into a certain category and not just my que. What I mean is that I would like to add words as I go along into a certain list that I can either decide to study or not study.

If you go to 'vocab lists' you can create different lists. You can then turn adding from these on and off from the study page as you wish.

Edit: Actually you have to click the "Made by Me" button under 'User made lists', then you can click 'new list'. Why they still haven't put a button saying 'new list' at the top of the page, I don't know.

But for example if I click the research button (magnifying glass) and find a word I like to add. How do I get this word to turn up in a specific list I have?

You want to take words you are already studying Skritter and put them into a list?

I'm a little confused.

Currently you can't plug words that you want to add directly into lists like that - you'd have to edit them into an unpublished list, which would probably be more trouble than you want to deal with.

However, in the nearish future, there's supposed to be a list system overhaul that will replace the queue altogether, and I suspect that that functionality will be available in the new system.

Right now I am studying a list of characters only. Let's say I come across a character that I would like to see an example word on, then I would click on "look up more info on this word". Now lets say I would like to add this word just by clicking the "+" to be able to study it. My question is how do categorize the word easily so that I can have it in a seperate list.

If I create a list I don't know how I can add words to it as I go along. Once I have created the list I can't change it, can I?

@funchinese Currently when you add words from the popup they go into your queue, rather than into a specific list. You can later go to your queue and copy the words, then paste them into a custom list. Not ideal, I know, but the alternative is asking the Skritter guys for some kind of new feature.

If you don't publish a custom list, you *can* change it.

Many thanks James, I believe it is your list (0-1000 most frequent) that I'm studying. Thank you for making it available.

I feel that it is easier to remember the character if I know a word or two with it. Do you have any general recommendations about learning the characters in a as short time as possible, < 1 month?

@funchinese Yeah, I think learning words and phrases helps a great deal. I don't know if that would speed up learning, though. Why do you want to learn quickly? Do you have a test coming up?

If you're looking to really develop your understanding of characters and words, find some phrases that use what you want to learn. You can practice those phrases in a couple of different ways - writing, reading, saying aloud, etc. You can use Anki for this if you don't like to use Skritter for phrases.

Hi funchinese, as mentioned earlier in this topic, the new list system will do just about what you want. You'll be able to easily add words to lists from the word popup, even. I'm currently getting toward the end of this project so I'm hoping it will be live in the near future. You'll also be able to edit published lists.
