Tablet layout issues

peanutbutter   June 15th, 2011 10:40p.m.

I'm skrittering using a Nook Color and just this evening the study layout is different -- it only fills a quarter of the screen. It had been working great for a long time until now and I'm looking forward to the layout getting back to normal!

ddapore99   June 16th, 2011 2:36a.m.

My 7 inch GALAXY Tab is still working fine if that's of any help.

mcfarljw   June 16th, 2011 5:12a.m.

on my galaxy phone it's cutting off a little bit on the right.

edit, and vertically I can fit the word on the top or the buttons on the bottom, but not both at the same time.

nick   June 16th, 2011 3:16p.m.

I have changed the layout code, but it should be now for alpha testers only, this latest change. If it's not working and it was, then switch off alpha features in your account settings.

Or, if you want to help me debug it, switch on alpha features and then play around with these settings until it's perfect, then let me know which settings you used, your device, and your user agent string:

physical_width (in mm; default is 50 if device is unrecognized)
resolution_width (in pixels; default is 480)

So you would alter the URL something like this until you got the width and scaling right:

http://www.skritter.com/study/all?physical_width=40&resolution_width=454

Clunky, but if this approach can work, I'll make something better. Considering throwing it away and doing something else instead.

peanutbutter   June 16th, 2011 7:09p.m.

Thanks so much, Nick! I am playing around with the scaling now and it is making a big difference.

Keep up the good work. Skritter is a really valuable resource for me and I'm really appreciate of all your efforts to make it better and better.

Jose   June 17th, 2011 10:04a.m.

I am trying the asus eee pad and using the url suggested does not work very well (too small). It's a pity, this tabletis perfect for skritter.
@nick, if I can help to get this tablet supported just say so!

Jose   June 17th, 2011 1:41p.m.

Oh! I played a bit with the url Nick gave and it's not bad at all. I still need to find the best numbers but it's usable.

So I think I will be able to use the table in my summer holidays :) So nice!

nick   June 17th, 2011 8:58p.m.

If you find parameters that work well, please send them to me along with your user agent string and device model so I can make them the default for that device. Thanks!

ddapore99   June 18th, 2011 12:06a.m.

I want to help with reporting issues with alpha features but I don't like posting those issues in the general forum (I feel like a cry baby). Could we get an alpha features forum? That way I wouldn't feel so bad about reporting issues while using the alpha mode.

Pinching to zoom doesn't work on the study page (in fact it never has). And my default medium settings shows the page too zoomed in.

When I change the default zoom to far it displays correctly though.

My User Agent:

ddapore99   June 18th, 2011 12:07a.m.

Oh and I use the 7 inch GALAXY Tab.

jww1066   June 18th, 2011 7:41a.m.

@ddapore99 Why would you feel like a crybaby? The forum is for feedback, and if a user has alpha features turned on he should be sending feedback on his experiences so the developers can bring the alpha features out of alpha.

ddapore99   June 18th, 2011 7:33p.m.

Well if I didn't have the alpha features turned on I wouldn't be having those problems. The forum is a public space and posting negative comments on it brings people down. I feel it's better to post positive suggestions and comments on it. We are supposed to send our complaints through the feedback button or I guess E-mail. Though waiting for a response this way can take a while. I feel sometimes huge issues like the mobile site not working need to see attention quickly.

nick   June 18th, 2011 11:54p.m.

You can feel free to email them or use the contact page if you don't want to post them here. I am checking email more frequently now, and aiming for forum only once a day. (And I'm usually the guy breaking stuff.) Or here works. Either way.

ddapore99, does changing the physical_width parameter as outlined above change the zoom for you?

ddapore99   June 19th, 2011 6:38p.m.

It does and I would like to use it when studying individual lists. Could you tell me how to do that? I'll send you the details once I'm able to study my individual lists once more. Setting it to "far" no longer works it's now too zoomed in again.

nick   June 20th, 2011 1:14a.m.

Just tell me what physical_width setting makes the zoom work correctly and I'll make it the default for your device, and then you won't have to worry about it again.

ddapore99   June 20th, 2011 1:51a.m.

Here is what the situation looks like on my 7 inch GALAXY Tab right now.

Skritter is fitting almost perfectly on the default browser.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/63811180@N07/5851358753/in/photostream

It looks the same with the resolution set.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/63811180@N07/5851910342/in/photostream

Skritter is showing up too large on my favorite browser NetFrontLifeBrowser.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/63811180@N07/5851982424/in/photostream

If I use the study all page and set the resolution and physical with the Net Front Life Brower I get the following.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/63811180@N07/5851462899/in/photostream

It works correctly at resolution_width=450 but no lower. Changing the physical_width doesn't seem to have any affect at all.

Could you tell me how to set the resolution when studying single list and not just the all section?

nick   June 20th, 2011 8:37p.m.

Great info, ddapore99! Thanks, this helps a lot. Hope to get you running smoothly soon.

When studying a single list, you can use the same GET parameters as when studying all:

http://www.skritter.com/study/list?list=72241099&resolution_width=600&tablet=true

You might also want to try the tablet=true parameter, as it doesn't look like that's getting picked up despite my efforts. I've made some changes, so hopefully it will be better now without that.

I don't think supporting the NetFront Life browser will work with this system if it's reading half of my viewport specification and not the other half. I'll try making it so that you can size the page yourself in that browser and see what happens. Let me know if the resizing is manageable or becomes an issue.

Paying User   October 10th, 2011 4:03a.m.

I am trying to use this on a 7" android and the resolution is horrible.

However, thanks to this forum, it seems to work better with a resolution width of 4894 and a physical width of 180.

Not sure why.....

Else on this 7" tablet I see nothing at all i.e. it is too magnified.

touch zoom etc. does not work.

My thoughts: Can we please have in the settings a way to detect or set our own devices e.g. like facebook etc. Then we can save a setting for the physical width and resolution width. Would be perfect.

Cheers.

Paying User   October 10th, 2011 4:14a.m.

Ok. Best settings are 40 physical, 500

Again, I think there should be a configuration setting, where 1) we can click detect current device so it can remember for the future 2) then save the above settings.

nick   October 11th, 2011 3:09p.m.

Hi Paying User,

That may be what we'll have to do. I keep going back and forth on whether the current approach can be saved. For now, though, keep that URL bookmarked until I can improve the situation.
