Number of characters learned VS export, bug ?

阿軒   October 30th, 2011 7:17a.m.

Hi skritterers and skritter team!

I recently nuked my account to start over and I wanted to check out my new progress in several ways.

First, of course, I went to the progress page and there it says I know about 520 characters. My understanding is that the number "520" is the total of unique characters -- WITHOUT -- duplicates (你 and 你們 count for only one 你).

What I did next was to go the export and I wanted to see which characters I had to study the least by ordering my "Coming up" and reading from the bottom. I selected characters only, tone marks etc... However I noticed the total number of items exported was about 240.

Shouldn't this number match? If I am exporting all 'characters' shouldn't it be the same number of characters I know reported from the progress page?

I hope I explained myself clearly!

Chris.

Not necessarily, if you're studying words. So say you add the word 你們 (and nothing else). You are now studying one word, but zero characters. But, when you learn 你們, you're marked down as having learned '你' and '們', indirectly. So now the progress says you've learned one word, and two characters. But the only thing you are actively studying is 你們. So those two individual characters don't show up in your export, because they're not being actively studied, but they are being passively learned.

Does that make sense? Granted, the progress stats have been buggy, so if this doesn't sound right let me know and I'll take a closer right.

hello skritter team and community,

i also am confused regarding what is shown in the progress graphs, the export list (all! + last studied), and the amount of words mentioned in the description of the vocab lists.

- i finished HSK1 completely which is around 150 words
- also ca.50% of hanyu kouyu 1 (so most of HSK1 was also practised here) = currently this means 350 words out of 680.

but my export list shows 535 "words"
and the progress page shows 350 learned characters and 220 learned words. shouldnt the export list be 570 then?

note: since a 2 weeks i am also adding single characters to the study lists if that helps understanding the links between the different lists!?

i am guessing "words" in the vocab list descriptions imply total characters but still i have problems of connecting the different figures and amounts. something must be coherent here or am i wrong?

thanks in advance! should also answer helixness question i guess

cheers

@Taomasi, Pardon if I am incorrect but after a year of skrittering I believe it works the follow way. Just like Scott mentioned above, when you add a word (say 你們) it counts for 1 word, 2 characters. Even if you add single characters (meaning you're now studying 你,們 and 你們 (total = 3 items) the characters won't duplicated (you still have just 2 characters).

@Scott, thanks, that does makes sense. So just to confirm I am getting this right, the export list contains only the actively studied items. So let's say I decide to export all studied characters, that infers exporting only the actively studied characters, right? If I only had 你們 in my list, that would export 0 characters.

thanks helixness, that should answer the difference between characters and words in the progress page but how is everything linked to the amount of words described in the vocab contents and in the export list?

the progress page and the other stats are for me a huge motivation factor while learning so i would like to understand how the different numbers fit together... :)

like how do the 50%of the 680 words from hanyu kouyu1 and 150 HSK1 words fit together with the progress page and export list (i guess all hsk1 words are also included in hanyu kou yu 1 first 50%)? so if my progress page says 350 learned character and 220 words, the 350 characters are more or less the ca. 50% of the hanyukouyu (incl. HSK1)? did i get that right? so after learning the complete book, i should have around 700 learned characters in total and saysomething around 350 words?

@helixness: Yep, you have it right. If you study a word, you learn its characters, and they show up in your progress stats. But because you didn't directly add the characters to your studies, they don't show up in the export.

@Taomasi: It's a pretty complex process going from the words and characters in any given list you're studying and the progress stats. You cannot simply take the number of vocabs in the lists you're studying and hope to be able to add them together somehow to get the progress stats. It's much more complicated than that.

Going back to the simple example I gave above, you have a hypothetical list of just one word: 你們. You add it and learn it. Your progress should now say: one word and two characters learned. You added *one* vocab from a list, but your have learned *three* things.

But your list could get a lot longer, and yet your progress would stay the same. So your list could consist of 你們, 你, and 們. You're now actively studying both the word and its individual characters. The progress page stays the same. In this case, you added *three* vocabs from a list, and learned *three* things. So whether the list has one vocab, or three, the progress stats in these scenarios stays the same. You see you can't go from the number of words in the list and hope to match that with the progress page.

The progress also doesn't double count words added from separate lists. Several words are shared by the two lists you're studying. So for those words or characters, they're only counted once in your progress. So the progress numbers get even more separate from the list numbers as you add from multiple lists.

As for the export, it would output the same number of lines as the number of vocabs in list you were studying, if you were studying one list. Again, it doesn't show duplicates, so your export would be the number of vocabs added from your lists, minus the number of vocabs that are shared between the two.

thanks for the thorough explanations! i think i got it all now.

just two more things and then i ll stop to be so curious for a while :)

- addition to the export list explanation: isnt it also minus the not yet studied characters ("last studied") of the lists?
- what stat reflects my realistic level? the progress graphs?

多谢!

I'd also be interested in Taomasi's second question. I'm not too sure which one to refer to when it comes to my "level". Although I would go by "words" because characters alone are more of a "framework" to me.

I'm currently taking an intro stats course and I admit i'd love to see some cool info like stats for mean & standard deviation of all users together!

Yes, sorting by last studied will not include any words not yet studied at all, even if they've been added from the lists. Next studied will catch those though.

The progress graphs are your best bet. Just remember that they can be a little off; there's a small margin of error, so don't use the exact numbers.

We really do have a lot of data, collected over the years. We need to through some research at it someday.
