Chinese Textbooks

Snuggles   February 17th, 2011 9:08p.m.

Does anybody have a recommendation for a good Chinese textbook to use for self study?
I have checked out a few and they seem to be about the same.
Any help would be appreciated.

P.C. T'ung - Colloquial Chinese for beginners - character set (1 book) and pinyin book + recordings.
This is the beginning book i used on my degree and in fact, P. C. T'ung was my first teacher - however, it's a great book and goes into detail about the stroke order for every character which is very helpful for a beginner.

One thing that might not suit you though is that it uses full-form characters - but the simplified versions are given throughout.
