A standardized language proficiency test, the Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì, or HSK test, is created by the Beijing Language and Culture University. Words on the HSK lists are grouped by frequency, with words in the HSK 1 list occurring most frequently in written Chinese and HSK 4 words occurring with the least frequency. Our HSK 1 list covers the most common 1001 words and 851 characters. This is the old, pre-2010 test. Jake Marble provided us with a starting point for making this list.
